Full Day Tour Poas Volcano, Doka Coffee Estate & Sarchi Town
Overview

Poás Volcano National Park is a powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. Considered by most to be one of the most breathtaking sites in the entire country, the Poas Volcano sits high above 14,000 acres (5,666 ha) of various habitats and life zones which make up Poas Volcano National Park. Rising up to 8,885 ft (2,708 m), Poas remains one of Costa Rica's largest and most active volcanoes attracting thousands of visitors per year. Walking just 15 minutes from the visitor's center, the main crater supplies guests with a spectacular view. At almost a mile in diameter (1.6 km), the crater- rain-fed sulfuric pool still bubbles and emits smoke into the air, reminding you of its imposing activity.

After visiting Poas Volcano, continue to Doka Estate, located just a 40 minutes ride from the volcano.  The farm belongs to the Costa Rican Vargas Ruiz family, pioneers of coffee production for more than 70 years. In 2000 and 2001 Doka Estate was awarded as the best Estate coffee of Costa Rica for two consecutive years.

The tour begins in the seedbed. There you will observe the development process of the plant up to the point of recollection of the ripe grain. You will also learn about the history of the estate, its owners, the production and varieties of plants, the geography of the area and the traditional ways of cultivating the grain. The second station is the oldest humid coffee processing plant, declared to be an Architectural Heritage for Humanity in 2003, that works by hydraulic power. In the receiver, you can see the first classification of the grains; afterwards the process of de-pulping of first and second quality coffee takes place in the grinders.

Finally we visit the roasting plant Café Tres Generaciones where you will be explained and can observe the different types of roasts that are offered. After the tour you will have lunch at Doka Estate before heading to Sarchi town.

A key artisan town in Costa Rica, Sarchi is best known for the vibrant and pretty oxcarts that are handcrafted locally and sold all over the country. A national symbol of Costa Rica, the oxcart plays a key role in the country’s history, as they were used to transport coffee beans to nearby and faraway markets. Highly ornate, these oxcarts are elegantly craved and are usually painted with bright colors.

Besides the beautiful handicrafts, another reason to visit this charming town is for its unusual church that is painted pink and blue. Built in the 1950’s, this two-towered church sits on a hill overlooking the town.

Half Day Visit to Orchid Botanical Gardens
Overview

You will be picked up by our driver/guide who will take you to La Garita de Alajuela (close to San Jose International Airport) where you will find an infinite variety of colorful orchids, exotic birds, majestic trees, tropical plants, and much more.

This Orchid Garden was born 30 years ago in a unique property located in La Garita, Alajuela. It was developed in a former coffee plantation that was surrounded by beautiful native trees that luckily survived the development in the area. Claudio Salas, botanist aficionado, orchid expert and owner of the property, felt the urgency to preserve this valuable flora and had a vision to create an ecosystem for the orchids. This idea provided a perfect habitat to the orchids helping them to fully develop and offer a place bursting with color and freshness.

Other different varieties of tropical and ornamental plants such as heliconias, gingers and palms were added to the property adding more species of plants to the setting. Afterwards, greenhouses, nurseries and a laboratory were built, and from that moment on, Claudio Salas started the process of orchid development.

One of his great achievements is that almost 100% of orchid plants living in the garden are produced in a lab, which later are integrated into the garden. When the orchids find a perfect natural habitat, they begin to settle on the trees and proceed to propagate wildly. This process, in unison with the great love and dedication that Claudio Salas has for orchid plants, gives life to what is known today as the Botanical Orchid Garden, Costa Rica.
